Know someone who’s interested in BJJ or on the fence? Maybe my experience will help.
Okay, so maybe rolling around with sweaty people at Gracie Barra wasn’t on my 40-to-50 bucket list, but hey, life’s full of surprises! As a 49-year-old with a few “battle scars” (okay, maybe more than a few), I was initially hesitant about BJJ (Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu). Injuries? At my age? But the allure of a challenge and the promise of a supportive community in Newtown and Princeton drew me in, and I haven’t looked back since. If you’re like me and must be tricked into exercising or if you simply deserve some time to focus on yourself, read on. Adult BJJ might just be for you and those of you already practicing can testify.
Safety First, Fun Always:
Sure, there’s always a risk of bumps and bruises, but our gym takes safety seriously. We warm up here at Gracie Barra like it’s nobody’s business and focus on technique, not brute force (I mean, even the kids shout the routine at this point). It’s not about being flashy; it’s about being smart (and not ending up on the injured reserve list). Our techniques are practical and we have classes for kickboxing, women’s self-defense, yoga, and the usual BJJ items. Strength training and flexibility exercises are crucial for women. These activities not only counteract the effects of declining estrogen levels but also contribute to overall health and well-being for all of us! Together it gives me a well-rounded front to ensure I’m running well into my 80’s. (Ok, maybe not literally “running” who wants that?).
Forget the “Me” in “Team”:
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is all about looking out for your training partners. We tap out when we need to, and everyone understands that. Plus, the camaraderie is unbeatable. I’ve made friends I never would have met otherwise (and we’re not just bonding over our shared love of spandex). It’s great to be a mentor and to be mentored by some seriously strong and quality women who have enriched my life. It’s also good to see the younger guys respecting their teammates, regardless of gender.
Age is Just a Number:
I’m not going to lie, I was worried about being the “old lady” on the mat. But Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is for everyone (don’t quote me, quote master Carlos), regardless of age or fitness level. We all start somewhere, and the sense of accomplishment when you nail a new move is addictive. If you want to find the fountain of youth, it’s rooted in fitness and being proud of what your body can accomplish, regardless of appearance. Let me know if you find it in one of the energy drinks at Gracie Barra Newtown, perhaps a Celsius?
Competition? No Pressure!
While some people love the thrill of competition, it’s totally optional. I’m more into the fitness and self-defense aspects, and that’s perfectly fine. You can come to any tournament and cheer on your team or hold your teammate’s hands while they breathe deeply before a match.
So, What Are You Waiting For?
If you’re looking for a fun, challenging, and supportive community (and aren’t already here with us), this is it with Gracie Barra. You might be surprised at what you discover (and who you meet). And who knows, maybe you’ll even find yourself embracing your own unexpected midlife crisis!
